Urban Yard in Kharkiv

This proposal was developed in response to an international call for ideas to support the reconstruction of Kharkiv, a city deeply affected by war. The project focuses on creating a resilient urban environment where public and commercial spaces play a central role in restoring daily life and fostering community.

Public Space

The design introduces a new framework of connected public spaces, beginning with a central pedestrian axis linking key areas across the site. Along this spine, a network of plazas, courtyards, and open zones supports a range of social functions — from informal gatherings to organized events. Small-scale commercial units are integrated at ground level to activate the streetscape and support local business recovery.

Rather than treating public space as residual, the proposal positions it as essential infrastructure — supporting mobility, interaction, and adaptability over time. The result is a public realm that feels open, welcoming, and usable from the earliest stages of reconstruction — a foundation for rebuilding not just structures, but civic life.

In today’s reality, shelters have become part of everyday life. This design embraces that by integrating shelters into public spaces rather than isolating them. Constructed from CLT and concrete, these shelters offer more than protection — they become places to gather, play table tennis, watch movies, or enjoy a quiet coffee.
